GBR009 Supermarine Seafire III (1:285)

Add to Wish List

One Supermarine Seafire III per pack. The 'navalised' version took a long time to develop and was not a great success.

The idea of converting the Spitfire which had dominated the skies over land, into a carrier aircraft made some sense. The problem was that the Spitfire was designed for running off airfields, not carriers. While it provided a better carrier borne fighter than the Gladiator or Fulmar it was not as effective as aircraft designed for carrier use like the Corsair or even Zero. Everything from the strength of the undercarriage to the need to fold wings caused compromises.

It was not until after the war that a properly designed naval version of the Spitfire was put into production.
